Bridging Scales: A Thoughtful Architectural Proposal for Merrick Road, Southall

Project Overview
Located on Merrick Road, Southall, the site is surrounded by large-scale, residential-led developments to the north and east. To the north, the recently approved Arches Business Centre features towers reaching up to 23 storeys, while ongoing developments to the east also include residential buildings of similar height, marking the area's shift from small-scale industrial structures to urban high-rise living.

In contrast, to the south lie two rows of Victorian terraces, signifying a substantial change in scale. Our proposal mediates between these contrasting typologies, bridging the transition with thoughtful architectural design.

Design Context
Emerging schemes in the vicinity prioritise the public realm, featuring chamfered or curved corners, angled façades, and landmark buildings that enhance the pedestrian experience and connectivity. Merrick Square, a focal point of pedestrian activity, benefits from the future railway pedestrian bridge. Neighbouring developments integrate courtyards and shared gardens as private amenity spaces visible from public areas, further enriching the urban fabric.

Architectural Approach
The design proposal offers a unique opportunity to transform the site into a distinctive residential-led development, contributing significantly to affordable housing. A stone colonnade marks the entrance, with a material palette shift to create visual distinction while maintaining continuity through brickwork wrapping behind the concrete elements. The tower's vertical integration is emphasised by rotated columns in the colonnade, linking the design from base to crown. Differentiated façade strategies highlight the block heights, utilising a minimal yet versatile material palette to establish a cohesive and dynamic architectural identity.

The design proposal and supporting technical drawings represent an exceptional opportunity to transform this site into a new and distinctive residential led scheme; one that can provide a significant affordable housing contribution while also fostering a vibrant and accessible public realm.
