Merging Old and New: A Contemporary Home in Ealing

This project is located at the junction of Jersey Road and Balmoral Gardens in Ealing, London. The site originally consisted of a single-storey detached bungalow and the side garden of a two-storey end-of-terrace house. It marks a transition in the streetscape, where Victorian terraces meet bungalows and detached homes.

The design balances a contemporary style with sensitivity to the surrounding context. The front façade features a carefully considered mix of glazing and brickwork, echoing the red-brick Victorian terraces along Jersey Road while maintaining a modern, understated aesthetic. Covered entrances and proportioned fenestration ensure the design merges seamlessly with the streetscape.

The rear elevation adopts a more open and flexible approach, with ground-floor glazing connecting indoor living spaces to the garden and vertically aligned openings providing continuity with the front.

This project demonstrates how contemporary architecture can respect and enhance its surroundings, combining thoughtful material choices and a site-specific design to create a harmonious addition to the neighbourhood.
