Thomas’s Kensington
December 2006, Reconf. of existing school
The remodelling/refurbishment of an existing catering school into a new purpose built gym/hall and theatre. Adding to the existing two buildings of the Thomas’s Kensington campus, allowed the school to release much-needed extra classrooms from Cottesmore Gardens and Victoria Road. The new space encompasses a new gym/hall, music cells, kitchen, lower ground floor offices and a high specification theatre.
The entrance was to be the focal point with a geometric timber ceiling leading the way up into the main body of the school. The relationship between the contemporary insertion and the existing ornate staircase livened up this heavy traffic area. Arranged around this new opened up hall we placed a new kitchen, dry and freezer store, art room, computer room and access links over the varying levels to the building to create a free flowing school in terms of circulation and organisation.
